History of Oracle Java Licensing
2010
2010 Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, marking a shift in Java’s licensing policies. Oracle Introduces the Binary Code License (BCL) model for Java SE.
2019
2019 Oracle Java SE subscriptions required for commercial users. Oracle Technology Network (OTN) and Global Public License (GPL) replaces the BCL model. Change to OTN model for Commercial Use using processors (Procs) and desktop (Named User Plus (NUPs)).
2021
2021 Oracle introduced the No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC) license to adjust changes to the Java SE subscription model.
2023
2023 Introduced the Oracle Java SE Universal Subscription model based upon the “employee” metric.
